The 2014 Central Regional Best Framer, Mr. Robert Crentsil [aka BOB] has called for a more deserving award to selected best farmers in the future.
Speaking to Newsghana.Com, Mr. Bob Crentsil said though the institution of the National Best Farmer Award by former president Jerry John Rawlings is a noble idea, however some of the award given to the award winners are not deserving enough, leaving much to be desired.
He recounted his incident where he was given a tricycle motor bike and an ecolack bag as his prize for winning the award as regional best farmer, but expressed surprise when he later read in the newspapers that he was presented with a list of items, which according to him, were not among his prize.
He said sometimes when they return home with their prize, they become laughing stock of their community because the items they are often given as best farmers are not encouraging.
According to him, he has countless number of such ecolack bags in his room, and has not bothered to open the one he was given as his prize.
With a large tract of cocoa farm, rubber plantation, herds of cattle, sheep and goats, general agriculture and other livestock as well as poultry farm at Ajumako Ochiso in the Central Region, Mr. Bob Crentsil has suggested the construction of an accessible road to the farm of the award winner, a farm machinery or a house as some of the prizes that must the considered as award not only to the National Best Farmer, but all Regional Best Farmers in future organization of such award schemes.
He said when that is done, more people, especially the youth will go into agriculture and also promote the sector in the country.
